From the series “The Salvation of Mankind”
You now have been saved by the grace through your faith in Jesus Christ. You have confessed publicly that you are a sinner and believe that Christ died on the cross for your sins. You also believe that you repent or turn away from your sins you will be forgiven by God of your sins. In most cases, you may have done this at a church. However, if you didn’t if you confessed your faith in Jesus Christ you are saved. Now what should you do next? In this article, we will explore step by step what you should do next as a new Christian?
John 1:1-2… In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. The first thing a new Christian should do is to get a guide for your Christian journey with Jesus Christ. This guide is the bible or as Christian calls it the Word of God. This Holy Bible is your daily instruction manual you walk with your now Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I would highly recommend a good student bible edition such as the “Life Application Study Bible”. This type if study bible breaks down the bible by bible books history who wrote that book of the bible and why? It doesn’t matter what version as long as you understand what you are reading. If you haven’t ever been in church before you became a Christian I would recommend an easy to read version of the bible such as (ERV) Easy to Read Version, or (GNT) Good News Translation. Most people read the (KJV) King James Version or NIV New International Version of the bible. I personally read the (NKJV) New King James Version of the bible. Also, it would be a bad idea to invest a little money in an audio set of the whole bible. I would highly recommend the audio version of the bible, “The Word of Promise”. You should have the same audio bible version (ERV), (KJV), or (NIV) as your printed version. This way you can read along as you listen to different books of the bible.
Now that you have chosen your bible what should you read first? Most people recommend that you read the four Gospels of the bible first and I would conquer with that recommendation. The reason what you the read the four Gospels is that you want to know learn as must as possible about your Savior Jesus Christ. I recommended earlier the “Life Application Study Bible”. Here is why? This study bible tells you the purpose of each of the four Gospels. For instance, Matthew’s purpose was to prove that Jesus is the Messiah, Mark’s purpose was to present the person, work, and teachings of Jesus, Luke’s purpose was to present an accurate account of the life of Christ and to present Christ as the perfect human and Savior, and John’s purpose was to prove conclusively that Jesus is the Son of God and all that believe in Him will have eternal life. After you have read the four Gospel books I would recommend you read the book of Romans because it is Paul’s account about how Christian should treat one another. Beyond that, you should read the entire bible all 64 books!
Now the bible is divided into two testaments ‘the Old Testament and the New Testament’. Basically, the Old Testament tells of chosen people of God and the coming of Jesus Christ, and the New Testament tells of the ministry of Jesus Christ and his disciples as well as Paul the Apostle who wrote nearly half of the New Testament. For the new Christian at first we recommend you stay in the New Testament but the Old Testament will be very valuable to you in your Christian walk. For example, if you want to know how to deal with a problem you should read the book of Proverbs. In the book of Proverbs, it should teach you how to attain wisdom and discipline and have a prudent life that is to know what is right and fair.
Matthew 16:13-18… 13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. The second thing I would recommend to a new Christian would get into a full Gospel church. Now that you have a bible you don’t want to get confused with the different meanings of the word of God, so you need a bible teaching church. Not just a church that has a good Sunday School but a very good Bible class. Why is having a very good bible class so important to the new Christian? Well, for example, let’s say you are reading your bible and you read in Proverbs chapter 1 verse 7 …The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction … the fear in which they are referring to is that of reverence, meaning respect and honor the Lord and obey His word. It doesn’t mean that you should be scared of God like you will be scared of a beast or unknown thing. You should show reverence to God’s power if you don’t obey His word but the great thing about being a Christian is that even if that happens God’s grace and love through Jesus Christ God will forgive you of that sin against the word. In a full Gospel church, you will learn that in your bible class.
To be more accurate of what is a full Gospel church is? In the full Gospel church, the believers believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirits. To name a few teaching, speaking in tongue, healing others. The greatest gift is love and we all have that gift to love one another. But the full Gospel church can help you find and understand your spiritual gift. The full Gospel church will be a praying church. It will be a church that believes that prayer changes things in our lives. The full Gospel church believes in evangelism that is to go out preaching as well as witness Christ love and mercy. The church may do this in a number of ways through outreach ministries like feeding the homeless or visiting their sick and shut in or visiting convicts in prison. The full Gospel church also evangelizes by witnessing the Gospel of Jesus Christ meaning recruiting others into the church of Christ. If you have read the four books of the Gospel of Jesus Christ you will already know that you are a disciple of Christ and you are supposed to do this as a Christian. Some full Gospel churches witness at the shopping malls or the grocery stores or anywhere that are public social gatherings. It is sad that a lot of churches have gotten away from this one on witnessing.
Romans 15:5-7… 5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, [b] to the glory of God …The final basic and ongoing thing a new Christian should do is to strengthen your relationship with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Your true purpose in doing this is to praise God for His love and mercy. To strengthen your relationship with Christ you should do four things; 1) Read your bible daily, 2) Meet together with other believers regularly, 3) Get involved in a ministry group, and 4) You will need to pray daily. Doing these four things will strengthen your walk with Jesus Christ and you will be able to combat any foe Satan or otherwise that will tempt you away from God’s presence. Now you need to know exactly will you accomplish things four things to strengthen your relationship with Christ.
- Reading your bible daily. When you read your bible you have to pray for understanding. The word of God can sometimes be very confusing and you may not understand what a scriptural passage means to you. This is where a full Gospel church would be helpful because it will benefit you in your understanding in the word of God. The most important thing is that you have to know and understand the word of the Lord for YOURSELF!!! You may have to read a scriptural passage several times in order to understand its meaning.
- Meet together with other believers regularly. This would be important for several reasons. First in the bible it Jesus states in Matthew 18:19-20… 19 “Again I say[a] to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.” … Jesus speaking to His disciples looked ahead to a new day when he would be present with His followers not in the body, but through His Holy Spirit. In the body of believers (the church), the sincere agreement of two people is more powerful than the superficial agreement of thousands, filled with the Holy Spirit, will pray according to God’s will, not their own: thus their request will be granted. The other reason is that you may be able to get help on understanding that bible scripture you didn’t understand before. Another reason you will grow as a person and a Christian through the support of the other believers.
- Get involved in a ministry group. Here is where your spiritual gift or gifts will come into play. Serving in the church of Christ or the body of Christ can be challenging as well as uplifting. To really serve in the body of Christ you have to decrease so that God can increase in your life. There is a scripture in the bible to speak to this very clearly in John 3:30…30 He must increase, but I must decrease … from this scripture John the Baptist willingness to decrease in importance shows unusual humility. Pastors and the others Christian leaders can be tempted to focus more on the success of their ministries than on Christ. Beware of those who put more emphasis on their own achievements than on God’s kingdom. Always be humble when you serving in the body of Christ regardless of the situation it is never about you but who you serving and that is Christ. This is what I mean when I say you must decrease and let God increase.
- You will need to pray daily. This is your chance to communicate with God directly. That is what you are doing when you pray. It is stated again in the bible in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18… 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you … Our joy, prayers, and thankfulness should not fluctuate with our circumstances or feelings. Obeying these three commands – be joyful, pray continually, and give thanks – often goes against our natural inclinations. When you make a conscious decision to do what God says, however, we will begin to see people in a new perspective. When we do God’s will, we will find it easier to be joyful and thankful. I submitted a gospel video that speaks to how we should worship God. Enjoy the video. Always Remember to Keep the Faith and God Loves You and So Do I!!!
