Many people have asked this question about our relationship with God. But first, before we explore this issue let get a definition of the word “covenant”. A covenant is an agreement or a contract between two or more parties. There are several covenants God has made with mankind at least according to the Word of God. There is the covenant of Eden where God makes a promise of redemption through the seed of the woman and the eventual destruction and eradication of sin. The covenant to Noah where God promises never again destroy the earth with a flood. The covenant to Abraham where God promises the seed of Abraham and his descendants would be blessed and the land of Israel promised to Abraham. The covenant to Moses where God promises the law which would govern the life of the Israel people. The covenant to David where God promises the seed of the Messiah goes through the seed of the house of David. The new covenant which absorbs all the other covenants through your faith in Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for our sins through his death. In this article, we want to focus on the new covenant with mankind.
However, before we get into God’s new covenant with a man we first must compare the old covenant with the new covenant. To do this we must explore the old covenants with man. Regarding the old covenant with a man we had to make animal sacrifices for our sins an example in the bible is in Exodus 10:25,…But Moses said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. This sacrifice was done to protect the Israel from the nine plague of darkness during the period where Israel were slaves to Egypt. Moses is talking to the Pharoah of Egypt telling him that they needed to make sacrifices to God with their livestock. Today we don’t have to make sacrifices to God with our livestock of animals under the new covenant. In the Old Testament people had to make sacrifices to God because it was stated in the bible in Exodus 22;20,…“He who sacrifices to any god, except to the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed. This was a moral principle under the laws of the Ten Commandments. We should follow the Ten Commandments but under the new covenant God has made a promise to us that we will not be destroyed if we don’t make animal sacrifices to God. In the Old Testament, people had had a physical place to worship God in Exodus 33:10…. All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door. In the new covenant, we do go to church to worship God but we must worship God in our hearts, therefore the church of Christ is in our hearts, not a building. Also in the Old Testament people had to obey rules such as the Ten Commandments set up by Moses but under the New Testament there are no laws by man but by Christ and all we have to do is serve the living God, Jesus Christ. Jesus instructs us on how to serve the living god in Matthew 5:1-11,…And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Jesus also teaches us that we are the salt and the light of the world in Matthew 5:13-14…13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. God wants a man to serve Him from our hearts and not our deeds less we bust that we may be greater than another through our deeds. Our deeds alone will not save us from our sins but serving God through our deeds giving God the glory and not ourselves will grant us salvation. These are a few examples of the covenants with God and man from the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Let’s now explore the new covenant with God and mankind. I stated before that the new covenant between God and man supersedes all the previous covenants. The reason why the new covenant supersedes the other covenants because in this new covenant it states in Hebrews 8:10-12,…. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds[a] I will remember no more.”… This is why Jesus Christ came to us so that we would have an everlasting covenant with God. We do have our bible, God’s word, to guide us but only if we believe in our mind and hearts will our covenant with God be in effect. We don’t have to worry about making any sacrifices or any laws society may make. All we have to do is believe that Christ died for the redemption of our sins and serve our living God. This salvation is a gift from God we can’t earn it!!! This new covenant of grace as I call it is given to us as Christ’s offers to forgive our sins and bring us to God through his sacrificial death. We will still rebel against being told how to live through God’s word but the Holy Spirit will give us new desires to help us obey God ways.
One might ask how does the Holy Spirit gives us desires God’s word when Jesus spoke to his disciples in John 15:15-18…15 “If you love Me, keep[a] My commandments. 16 And I will pray for the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you… as well as John 14:25-26… 25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. I believe that God has an everlasting covenant with a man because we have a soul and this is where the Holy Spirit must dwell. As long as we have the capacity to love in our hearts whether you believe in God or not you have a free access to this new covenant with God. When you love something greater than yourself that is when your life or our desires change from worldly desires to Godly desires. The Christian has a new mind and heart through the Holy Spirit. The covenant with God is complete in the new covenant.
The question of this article does we have a covenant with God and the answer is Yes. Mankind has always had a covenant with God since the creation of the world. We are God’s greatest creation and I believe that God always wants to be with his own creation. The covenants with mankind are just God’s way of loving his creation. When you have children you would make a promise with them to love, protect, as well as teach them. So why not our heavenly Father, God, would make the same promise to his children. All you have to do is believe that Jesus Christ died for the remission of your sins and you will be able to join the other Christians in the new covenant. I submitted a gospel video related to this article. Enjoy this video. Always remember to “Keep the Faith and God Loves You and So Do I!!!”
